HARRISBURG – Today, Gov. Josh Shapiro unveiled his budget priorities for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Rep. Charity Grimm Krupa (R-Fayette) issued the following statement in response:
“The governor’s proposal is nothing short of reckless. He’s calling for an increase of more than $3.5 billion in spending. That’s a 7.5% increase over last year’s budget, which already spent too much. Our estimated revenues are only projected to increase by 2.8%. That’s a big gap to close.
“The governor has decided to close that gap by draining what’s left of our surplus. If he gets his way, that means he will have spent the entirety of the $8 billion surplus he inherited in just three years.
“But that’s not enough to balance the books, so he also needs another $1.6 billion from the Rainy Day Fund. At this rate, the governor will have decimated our Commonwealth’s ability to respond to any crises.
“The governor’s plan also relies on legalizing recreational marijuana to balance the books. Given the shortcomings of the medical marijuana program we already have in place, are we really in the best position to assume recreational marijuana should even be legalized in the first place?
“Luckily, this plan is just the start of a long and winding road to a final product. I’m pleased to have been appointed to the House Appropriations Committee for this session, so I can have more of a voice in this process. Judging by the perilous starting point the governor has put us in, we have a lot of work to do.”
